Who can adopt a family?
A: Anyone can participate as long as they are 18 years of age. We encourage you to participate as a family, or get your church, civic group or employees involved and adopt several families. Another option is to adopt one or more senior citizens who are in need and alone this holiday season.
Do I have a choice in the family I would like to adopt?
A: You may choose your family based on the number of children you’d like to adopt, the ages of the children and/or gender of the children. Please note, you will only provide the children in the family with gifts. You will also choose which part of Kansas City you would like to adopt a family or senior from.
What if I or my group wants to adopt more than one family or senior?
A: Great! Most of our families range from 1-6 children. Just put the TOTAL number of children you would like to adopt on the online sign-up form and we will match you with enough families to reach your total request. You will receive gift requests for only the children in the family or families.
How will I know what my adopted family needs or wants?
A: All sponsors will receive information on each child’s age, gender and gift wishes, as well as the child’s clothing sizes. The wish list is only a shopping guide – you are not required to buy all the items listed. Expect to spend $30-35 per child. Only children receive gifts, however we ask sponsors to purchase a grocery store gift certificate to provide the entire family with a holiday meal. You will receive guidelines on the appropriate gift certificate amount based on family size.
Where do I bring the gifts once I’ve purchased them?
A: You will receive via email instructions on where and when to drop off your family’s gifts. Gifts should be dropped off at the Salvation Army location you choose when you signed up online. The Salvation Army distributes the gifts to the families a few days before Christmas.
Do the sponsors have any contact with the families?
A: No, Adopt-a-Family is completely anonymous to protect both the donor and the family receiving the gifts. Just know that your anonymous gift of kindness will help a struggling family enjoy this holiday season with dignity.
Should the sponsors wrap the gifts?
A: For safety reasons, we ask that the gifts not be wrapped. If you wish, you may provide wrapping paper, tags and bows for the families to wrap the presents themselves. Please remove all price tags from the gifts. Please do not give cash. It is helpful to provide batteries if they are required.
Can I buy a gift card for a child instead of a gift?
A: We encourage you to purchase what is on the child’s wish list if possible, especially for small children. However, gift cards are completely acceptable for pre-teens and teenagers, who are more difficult to buy for.
What if a person signs up to adopt a family and can’t fulfill their obligation?
A: We ask that if you aren’t able to participate after signing up to please let the Salvation Army know as soon as possible so that we can make other arrangements for the family.
I signed up for Adopt-a-Family several weeks ago and still haven’t received any information about my family, what should I do?
A: We strive to contact every sponsor within a week. However, if after one full week, you still haven’t received any information, please call Jennifer Stepp at 816-285-2797.
