The Salvation Army began in St. Joseph in January of 1886 by conducting meetings over a saloon on the Southeast corner of Fifth and Edmond Streets. The first recorded leaders there were Capt. Wilkins and Cadet Lowe. In September of that same year, they moved to 1112 Jule Street. In February of 1932 a new building was constructed at a cost of $1,000 in the heart of the meat packing district. All labor was kindly donated for this location. A new facility was built in 1960 under the leadership of Major Juul Larsen. The most current Salvation Army building, at 602 Messanie, was completed in November, 2005.
