The Salvation Army Salutes Military Veterans at Civic Luncheon


Kansas City, MO – The Salvation Army is paying tribute to America’s military heroes at its 2013 Civic Luncheon May 8 at the Sheraton Kansas City Hotel at Crown Center.

Major Dan Rooney, USAF (Ret.) will be the featured speaker at the event. Rooney flew three tours of duty in Iraq. He is the author of “A Patriot’s Calling: Living Life Between Fear and Faith” and was named People Magazine’s Hero of the Year and ABC World News’ Person of the Year. Mr. Rooney is also the founder of the Folds of Honor Foundation and a PGA Professional.

The theme of this year’s Salvation Army Civic Luncheon is “A Debt Repaid: Serving America’s Heroes”. The Salvation Army has been providing assistance to the American military since the days of WWI and today, military veterans can turn to the organization for a spectrum of support including housing assistance, counseling, life management training and access to resources to help them readjust to society as well as spiritual sustenance for those who seek it.

The Salvation Army will also recognize two of the organization’s major supporters at the 2013 Civic Luncheon.  Larry Powell will receive the William Booth Award, one of The Salvation Army’s top honors. Mr. Powell co-founded Fountain Capital Management, LLC. He is a member of The Salvation Army’s Kansas City Metro Advisory Board, serving in various leadership positions including Board Chair. He is a member of the Baylor University Foundation Board and also serves on the board of the National Christian Foundation Heartland.

KCP&L will receive the Others Award, which is bestowed on individuals or organizations exemplifying extraordinary service to others. KCP&L has a very strong Corporate Contributions Program, donating to numerous causes financially and through employee volunteerism. KCP&L also partners directly with The Salvation Army through its Economic Relief Program to help Missouri customers in need of help paying their electric bills.

The Salvation Army has been helping people in need in Kansas City for more than 125 years through a broad array of social services including food for the hungry, clothing and shelter for the homeless, outreach to the elderly and ill and opportunities for underprivileged children.
